Professional bio

My name is Patrick Wanner, and I am an anesthetist-intensivist and a clinical researcher specializing in perioperative and intensive care medicine. My passions are caring for critically ill patients, researching ways to make acute care safer, and helping younger colleagues discover the beauty of anesthesia, emergency medicine, and critical care.

During my Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine residencies, I had the privilege of training at a multitude of Swiss institutions (Kantonsspital St. Gallen, Kantonsspital Baden, University Hospital Basel), gaining broad experience in critical care, perioperative care, and preclinical and clinical emergency medicine. I have worked as a prehospital emergency physician for Swiss Air-Rescue (REGA) and in the St. Gallen and Basel ambulance services.

I've gained extensive clinical research experience during my training with my mentors, Prof. Miodrag Filipovic (Kantonsspital St. Gallen / University of Basel), Prof. Luzius A. Steiner (University Hospital Basel / University of Basel) and Prof. PJ Devereaux (Population Health Research Institute / McMaster University). I am investigating strategies to improve the care of high-risk surgical patients and the critically ill. Convinced that research and patient care must be much more personalized, I co-founded the Personalising Acute Care Network, a collaborative network aiming to advance the research and adoption of precision acute care medicine. Moreover, I am leading AUTOREGULATE-NONCARDIAC, a multicenter prospective cohort study investigating precision BP monitoring during and following major noncardiac surgery. Finally, as part of my Masters in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University, I am researching using machine learning in the perioperative setting to predict clinical deterioration.

Last but not least, as a tutor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel, a mentor in the Joint Medical Master Program of the Universities of St. Gallen and Zurich, and an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor, I am regularly involved in teaching and mentoring activities.
